Medically Fragile Services
Medically Fragile Services are comprised of two residential buildings each having eight apartments. These buildings serve approximately 80 male and female individuals of varioius ages. Many of these individuals need pervasive staff support as they need wheelchairs and mechanical lifts to assist them with mobility as well as support from care givers when participating in personal care and activities of daily living due to extensive mental and physical disabilities.
The individuals participate in activities of their choosing at the Developmental Center and in nearby communities, including work, day program activities, sports, exercise, fishing, dining out, movies, shopping, etc. Some of the individuals participate in planning and preparing their meals.
Individuals receive pervasive medical support from on site, 24 hour nursing services with more intense medical support immediately available. They also receive many other professional services including: Psychology, Social Work, Music, Recreation, Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapy.
On at least an annual basis each individual's placement at the Developmental Center is evaluated. The individual's and guardian's desire for placement are considered along with evaluations by the individual's professional team. If through this process it is found that the individual's medical needs can be addressed, and his/her quality of life will be enhanced outside of the Developmental Center, then professional team members contact the Division of Services for People with Disabilities. Both USDC and DSPD staff help the individual and guardian pursue placement with a Medicaid Waiver Provider.
